Arts Commission May 3, 2016
Pursuant to due call and notice thereof, a Cottage Grove Arts Commission Meeting was held on
May 3, 2016.
I. CALL TO ORDER
Meeting called to order by Commissioner Atkinson at 7:00 p.m.
II. ROLL CALL
Members Present: Justin Atkinson, Meg Bjorkman, Andrea Cloutier, LeRoy Johannsen, La Rae
Mills
Members Absent: Cassie Klinga, Kathleen Kullman, Draven Museus, Lew Vogel
Others Present: Becky Ahlvin, Management Assistant
Justin Olsen, Councilmember
III. Approval of Agenda
A Motion was made to approve the agenda by Commissioner Cloutier, second by
Commissioner Mills, all were in favor.
IV. Approval of Minutes
Motion to approve the April 5, 2016 minutes by Commissioner Mills second by Commissioner
Johannsen, all were in favor.

VII. Action Items
A. Holiday Banner Competition — Do we offset the cost by charging an admission fee? Find a
sponsor? A discussion was had on sponsors in the Community and other funding
opportunities. A budget proposal will be put together to bring to Council. It was determined
a workshop will be held after the meeting June 7t", that will get more questions answered.
B. Sidewalk Poetry Program — Commissioner Vogel was not available to update, it was
decided to talk about this at the workshop in June also.
C. Strawberry Fest Art Program — No updates as Commissioner Vogel was not in attendance.
Will be tabled until next meeting. Commissioner Mills said two applicants were received for
the Minnesota Sings Talent Contest.
D. 2016-2017 Arts Commission Work Plan — Becky will put a plan together to move to Bi-
monthly meetings with workshops in between. She'll bring it to the June meeting for the
Commission to discuss further. Motion to move to bi-monthly meetings by Commissioner
Mills and that our long term and short term goals are consistent with what we wanted to do,
seconded by Commissioner Bjorkman. All were in favor.
VIII. Presentation of Information
A. Arts Opportunity Promotion — Flick Picks is Friday at 7:30 and Saturday at 3:00.
Oklahoma is at Park High School this coming weekend. Black Dirt Improv at River Oaks
May 8t". St. Paul Park has an event coming up on Saturday, gardening kick off from 10-
2pm. It is already on the Art Beat page.
B. Films in 5 Festival — Second annual festival is on. We have just started to promote it.
Film submissions are being accepted now through August 31, films will be screened
Saturday Oct 1 St from 1- 3 pm at Park High School. All information is on the Cottage
Grove website. No staff action is needed now. Will be promoting all summer.

XIII. Council Comments
Councilman Olsen gave an update on the City Council. Road construction on the 70t" and
Jamaica Round-About has started. City did close on the Home Depot, EBL&S will develop the
property. Hy-Vee will open sometime next year, target date is October. Last week the Aldi
Grocery Store opened. 380 residential homes are set to be developed at the former Swanlunds
Berry picking site, across from Pine Hill School. Redevelopment of the 80t" St. Crossing sight
includes strip center being shortened up, to move back Honest-1 Auto, for a new Kwik Trip. All
four corners will have new monument signs and new landscaping. Hamlet Park will have some
improvements to beautify and tie in nicely with the trail system. Pavement Management will
start in month of May. New restaurant coming to town, near Summerhill Mall, Junction 70.
CG had a record year for building permits last year, both commercial and residential, it looks like
we will crush that number this year.

Mills. Meeting was adjourned to the workshop at 07:33 pm.
