Still new to the concept of farming, James Sullivan Norris stepped onto a lonely prairie and staked out his farm. He wrote in his memoirs, "In July 1843 I located in Cottage Grove where I now reside... I built a cabin and called it Cottage Grove." He fought his way through approximately 40 acres of sod by putting in days of back- breaking work behind a wood plow. The result of his sweat and sore muscles was the first wheat crop in. Minnesota grown for trade. Unfortunately that crop never brought him any money. It never left his barn because Nor- ris didn't have any way to get it to a mill. It rot- ted away. But Norris was unshaken and he planted again in 1844. This time he was able to get his wheat processed at a mill in Afton that was recently constructed by LeMuel Bolles. But this time there were few people to sell the flour to, so it wasn't very profitable. However, that too changed and Norris was able to live well off the profits of his farming. Along the way he also carved himself an impressive career as a man the people of Cot- tage Grove and the territory trusted. As a historical figure, Norris has had little written about him compared to people like Henry Sibley. But he really didn't thirst for attention according to Robert Vogel, Cottage Grove's historic preservation officer. "He wasn't a big self -promoter," said Vog- el, adding that he was not even a worthy sub- ject for gossips during a booming era for the craft. Nonetheless, the focus of this year's Straw- berry Festival is on him as the first settler of Cottage Grove 150 years ago. Through his research, Vogel has pieced together a portrait of a gentleman farmer who seemed to earn the respect of most people who met him. "I never read anything about him saying he was anything but a heck of a guy," said Vogel. A compatriot of Norris', Robert Watson, described him as "largely self-educated, but a man of solid good sense and natural gifts, and very companionable withal." Norris was one of many young men from New England who traveled to the midwest. He left Maine during what Vogel called "The Yankee Exodus." About half of the population of the over- crowded New England states left between 1830-60. Vogel said there were two types of people in that group. One group was made up of the non -conformists which New England society was as happy to get rid of, as those lon- ers were to throw off civilization. The other group was made up of people looking to cut out a new empire. They clung together during their quest to establish a New England of the west which they could control. An empire they could have to themselves. -Norris' path to Minnesota was typical of the New Englanders that came west, but he didn't fit in entirely with either group. He had a suc- cessful career as a farmer and a politician by quietly walking between the two groups and getting done what needed to be done. Norris drifted from his home in Kennebec County, Maine, to Wisconsin. There he work- ed in the timber industry like most New Englanders. He moved onto work as a clerk in a trading post in what is "now known as Grey Cloud Island. The trading post was established by a fur trader named Joseph Brown. Brown found his place in history as the man who spear- headed the movement to get Minnesota estab- lished as a state. He also founded the St. Paul Pioneer Press newspaper. After Norris established his lone fai New Englanders followed. They stat wheat farms and took advantage of a fitable market that grew in the are A town was formed and Norris deeply involved in building it. He was frequend) of as a gubernatorial candidate, said Norris married Sophia Jane Norris and they adopted a son in the 1850's. ' Herbert Norris, was blind from birth, l up to become a well-known music. James Sullivan Norris died at ag cancer. There are no historical sites tence to say he was here, unless you co tage Grove as a whole. An empire they could have to themselves. Norris' path to Minnesota was typical of the New Englanders that came west, but he didn't fit in entirely with either group. He had a suc- cessful career as a fanner and a politician by quietly walki'ng;between the two groups and getting done what needed to be done. Norris drifted from his home in Kennebec County, Maine, to Wisconsin. There he work- ed in the timber industry like most New Englanders. He moved onto work as a clerk in a trading post in what is -now -known as Grey Cloud Island. The trading post was established by a fur trader named Joseph Brown. Brown found his place in history as the man who', spear- headed the movement to get; Minnesota estab- lished as a state. He also founded the St. Paul Pioneer Press newspaper. After Norris established his lone farm, other New Englanders followed. They started their wheat farms and took advantage of a very pro- fitable market that grew in the area. A' town was formed and Norris became deeply involved in building it. He was one of the founders of the Cottage Grove Lyceum Association, library and Masonic Lodge. He helped Cottage Grove establish the first school district in Minnesota and served on its board. He also served on the township board. Beyond the trappings of the young village, he was one of the frontier community's most influential people. He was a justice of the peace and a member of the Stillwater Conven- tion that petitioned President James Polk to create the territory of Minnesota. He served on the territorial council and in the State's House of Representatives. He was frequently spoken of as a gubernatorial candidate, said Vogel. Norris married Sophia Jane Norris in 1845 and they adopted a son in the 1850's. The son, Herbert Norris, was -blind from birth, but grew up to become a well-known musician. ' James Sullivan Norris died- at age 64 of cancer. There are no historical sites in exis-' tence to say he was here, unless you count Cot - tag& Grove as a whole.
