The Ojibwe Indians of northern Minnesota called it "Messipi" or "Big River" and it was also known as "Mee -zee -see -bee" or "Father of Waters". The shorelines in Cottage Grove are part of the II Mississippi National River and Recreation Area j+ (National Park System).
