RE: Section 4 Lake Renaming
Introduction
On June 18, the City received notice from Washington County about a public hearing scheduled for
7:00 p.m. on August 7, 2018, at the Washington County Board Room. The purpose of the hearing is
to review a petition to name the unnamed lake MNDNR Inventory Number 82-83W in Section 4 to
Lake Robert. The ACHP has been requested to provide input to the City Council for their July 18
regular meeting. A copy of the notification is attached as is the lake information and related historical
documents.

Section 4 Lake Renaming

Background
State statute requires that any lake naming requests be accompanied by a petition of 15 or more
citizens of the County and a review by the County Board after a public hearing. The current request
to the County included the required petition. The City currently owns a parcel of property abutting
the lake that was dedicated as park and open space with The Waters of Michael’s Pointe subdivision.
The Comprehensive Plan identifies additional public open space along the northern portion of the
lake. This access would be acquired through additional development and subdivision activities on
the property.
Discussion
The name “Lake Robert” is reported to be in recognition of one of the names of the previous owners
of the property that contains the lake. The petition includes numerous signatures from relatives of
Robert.
The ACHP should review historical records and common knowledge about the lake and discuss the
merits of the requested naming of the lake or offer name suggestions relative to the history of Cottage
Grove as so desired by the Committee.
Recommendation
That the ACHP review the request and provide a recommendation to the City Council.
