The MightV Mississippi River
The Mississippi River, flowing approximately
2,350 miles from Lake Itasca to the Gulf of
Mexico, has long been one of the defining
natural features of the United States.
The 0jibwe Indians of northern Minnesota
called it "Messipi" or "Big River" and it was
also known as "Mee -zee -see -bee" or
"Father of Waters".
The shorelines in Cottage
Grove are part of the j
Mississippi National River and
Recreation Area (National
Park System).
In the middle of a bustling urban setting,
this 72 mile river park offers quiet stretches
for fishing, boating, canoeing, birdwatching,
bicycling, and hiking. And there are plenty
of visitor centers and trails that highlight
the fascinating human history of the
Mississippi River.
