CC: Zac Dockter, Park and Recreation Director
Date: August 28, 2018
Subject: Path to Poetry Contest
Introduction/Background
In 2017, the Path to Poetry Contest began as residents submitted poems, one was selected by the Arts
Commission, and was painted on a path in a Cottage Grove Park. Commissioner Cheesman has offered
to Chair this event in 2018.
Eleven poem submissions were received electronically via the cities website. Judges narrowed the
entries to the top five poems. From this list, the Arts Commission will choose the winning poem.
Poems
#1 TOGETHER
All of us are here to play,
Each of us in our own way.
Happy laughter fills this space
As we move at our own pace.
When we meet we share a smile.
This special place is so worthwhile.
Thanks to those with vision bold
And volunteers with hearts of gold.
#2 WELCOME
Why should the concept be elusive
To make our plant more inclusive?
All are welcome in this place
Of all abilities and race.
And when all is said and done,
Relax and simply have some fun.
Equality as People
#3 UNTITILTED
Whether you stand firm like a mighty tree
Or softly sway like a beautiful flower,
However life may move in you,
Share in this place a precious hour.
#4 HUMANKIND
We are all one
Then why do our feelings ruin love and fun?
No matter race,
Gender, abilities or birthplace
We are all people, under the sun.
#5 MAGIC LIGHT
Sadness hits when your left out
That no one seems to care about
But when the light comes shining through
New friends come to welcome you
They will know when you're feeling down
So they will help undo your frown
Never let others feel left out
For that is what we care about
