Subject: Equipment Replacement for 2020
Introduction
This memo outlines the justification for the replacement of our 1997 Olympia lce Resurfacer.
Equipment Recommended for Replacement
Olympia lce Resurfacer
The resurfacer is due for replacement based on age and maintenance cost. The replacement
schedule of an ice resurfacer is 10 years for any trade in value. Once it hits 15 years with at
least 7000 hours, essentially there is no trade in value. The current ice resurfacer is 22 years
old and has 7446 hours. Since 2011 maintenance cost has been over$10,000 with another
$10,000 needed in the ne two years to replace hydraulic hoses, tires, etc.

Typically, any equipment with over 4,000 hours of use is naturally more prone to mechanical
failure. When using a mileage equivalent of 50 miles per hour on a standard road vehicle, the
7,446 hours on this resurfacer would equate to 372,300 miles. Similar to any vehicle with this
that type of mileage, the useful life of the equipment is near its end.
Additionally, rusting has become problematic. The complete underbody as well as the ice
conditioner has been rusting for several years. Pictures are provided below to show some of
the concern areas.
Staff does not recommend having an ice resurfacer over 20 years old as a frontline piece of
equipment that resurfaces ice on a daily basis for arena customers. This ice resurfacer is used
year-round and is prone to more breakdowns requiring specialized maintenance personnel to
repair damaged parts. Staff has done an excellent job on maintaining this resurfacer and
hopes to acquire a quality used ice resurfacer to address the daily needs of the Ice Arena.
