HomeMy WebLinkAbout2019-09-10 PACKET 05.D. TO: Advisory Committee on Historic Preservation FROM: John M. Burbank, Senior Planner DATE: September 10, 2019 RE: 1967 Village Hall/City Hall Demolition Introduction After numerous attempts to repurpose the use of the former 1967-2012 Village/City Hall at 7516 80th Street South, it was determined by the City Council that the building should be demolished and the property sold for the development of market-rate multi-family housing. The property is not listed on the local or national historic registers. Until 2017 it was not eligible to be placed on the City’s Local Historic Register. The features of the structure were modest, cost-effective, minimalistic governmental design common in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. No standout architectural features are present on the building. With the demolition scheduled for this fall, the ACHP is requested to discuss potential ac- tions that could be taken that would tell the legacy of the property to the future tenants and stewards of the site. Some of the items that were discussed in similar redevelopment projects in the City were indoor informational signs, outdoor informational signs, commem- orative plaques, or other education means that continue the story of the use of the property as a civic hub for the last 52 years and as farmland and prairie before that. Recommendation That the ACHP discuss the topic and provide a recommendation to staff.
