RE: Historic Property Review and Ranking
Introduction
As the city continues to grow and expand, there has appeared a growing occasion of conflicts with
old and new facets of the community. The City has over 200 properties that have been identified as
historic on an inventory that was completed in the early days of the City’s historic preservation pro-
gram. Some of the listings were only based on a property or structure being over 50 years old, and
other properties were listed with the backing of findings of significance. These properties are identi-
fied as being eligible to be placed on the Local or National Register of Historic Properties and Sites
with established findings of significance. Fourteen of the properties in the inventory are on the Local
Register of Historic Sites and Landmarks, and four are on the National Register of Historic Places.
In order for the City and Advisory Committee on Historic Preservation (ACHP) to better understand
the inventoried properties, the ACHP has been requested to review and rank the identified and in-
ventoried historic properties. This task will allow for the proper review and treatment as existing prop-
erties and new development merge or redevelopment occurs. The existing inventory has been
sorted, with demolished properties identified and is attached for review. The properties identified as
being the top 30 properties of interest would then be guided as priority properties deserving additional
preservation action. As the ACHP reviews the inventory, the following questions will help guide the
review discussion:
1. Property is on the National Register?
2. Property is on the Local Historic Register?
3. Property is unique in the community?
4. Property is unique in architectural style?
5. Property is associated with a historically important person, time, or event?
6. Property is outside of the MUSA?
7. Property is actively in use or occupied?
Recommendation
Review, discuss, and begin the inventory review. It has been suggested that the ACHP divide the
list into manageable sub-lists and do individual research for report back to the Committee at their
next regular meeting.
