RE: Dodge Nature Center Roofing Project
Introduction
Dodge Nature Center is requesting the ability to replace the existing roof on several structures.
Since the property is listed on the City's Register, all building permit requests are required to be
reviewed by the ACHP.
Discussion
Dodge Nature is continuing to improve the Shepard Farm property and is proposing to replace
the roofs on the farmhouse near 70th Street, as well as the milking building, stables, and garage
(see images below for reference). The current roof is more than likely original cedar shake
shingles, and those are falling off and showing holes to where the roof is in desperate need of
repair. They are currently getting bids from local roofers to keep a similar look and color to either
the old roof or the new bathrooms. They would like to move forward with a local roofer for the
cost of $70,000 for asphalt shingles. The cost of doing cedar shake shingles has come in at
more than double that amount from multiple roofers. Their hope is to do the project this spring
or summer so that it is done for when there are visitors at Shepard Farm.
