RE: Cottage Grove Reports – One Page Flyer Discussion
Background
On January 9TH the Cottage Grove City Council held their Strategic Planning Session for 2021.
During the meeting Council discussed how the City could continue to support businesses
throughout Cottage Grove. One of the ideas that was raised and supported by Council was the
creation of a one-page double-sided flyer that would be sent out to all households promoting
businesses within the community. The flyer would feature restaurants, retail locations, and
fitness centers within the City of Cottage Grove and would be mailed to the same households
that receive the Cottage Grove Reports.
Discussion
As part of launching the Discover Cottage Grove brand, it is important to bring its brand
awareness to the citizens of Cottage Grove. Although the main goal of the Visitor’s Bureau as
stated in the organizations Mission Statement is to promote Cottage Grove as a “premier
destination for leisure travelers, weddings, and outdoor enthusias ts”, a brand awareness
campaign that includes residents of the City when the organization launches would have the
benefit of bringing attention to the Visitor Bureau and tourist activities to Cottage Grove
residents. In doing so the organization could also help accomplish the goal laid out by City
Council of supporting local businesses by bringing awareness to them as part of Cottage Grove
Reports. The schedule for the rollout of the brand if partnered with a social media campaign
using the Explore Minnesota Crisis Marketing Grant would look as follows:
1. March 2021 – One-page insert is included in the March Cottage Grove Reports
featuring the launch of Discover Cottage Grove and focusing on restaurants, retail
businesses and fitness centers. City Facebook Post featuring Discover Cottage Grove
and a story is linked on the Cottage Grove website.
2. April 2021 – Discover Cottage Grove launches a social media brand awareness
campaign focusing on a 50-mile radius around Cottage Grove. Ads would be
designed by Sievers Creative and would be featured on Facebook.
In designing the one-page flyer the Visitor’s Bureau is proposing to use the services of Sievers
Creative, which has quoted the cost of $400 for its design. For printing of the flyer, the Visitor’s
Bureau would work with the City of Cottage Grove to use their same printer as Cottage Grove
Reports, which is GDI out of Hastings, MN due to no local printing options. The current price for
the City to print the Newsletter is $2,909. GDI has sent the Visitor’s Bureau a quote for the

addition of the one-page flyer of $3,942, this is the price for the total printing of Cottage Grove
Reports and the one-page flyer. The Visitor Bureau would then be responsible for paying the
difference of $1,033 for the printing. GDI has let us know that postage would not change
because of the additional one-page insert. The one-page flyer would be designed by Sievers
Creative in February with a final proof coming before the Board of Directors for approval.
Recommendation
By motion approve the cost of $400 for Sievers Creative to design a one-page flyer and
$1,033 for GDI to print the flyer to be sent with the City of Cottage Grove’s Cottage Grove
Reports newsletter.
