RE: Dodge Nature Center - Shepard Farmhouse Addition
Introduction
Dodge Nature Center (Applicant) is proposing a minor addition to the existing farmhouse onsite.
Since the property is listed on the City’s Register, all building permit requests are required to be
reviewed by the Advisory Committee on Historic Preservation (ACHP).

Discussion
Dodge Nature Center is continuing to improve the Shepard Farm property and is proposing to
remodel and complete two small additions to the farmhouse located on the northern part of the
subject property. The Applicant’s proposed additions include office space, classrooms, and a
300 square foot addition to the existing kitchen. Additionally, the Applicant is adding a sprinkler
system and making the building ADA compliant by adding an elevator (Attachment A).

The proposed addition is consistent with the City Code and with the Secretary of the Interior’s
Standards for Rehabilitation. The Secretary of the Interior’s Standards state:
New additions, exterior alterations, or related new construction shall not
destroy historic materials that characterize the property. The new work shall
be differentiated from the old and shall be compatible with the massing, size,
scale, and architectural features to protect the historic integrity of the property
and its environment.

Proposed Kitchen Addition
The Applicant will provide overview of the proposed project at the meeting.
Recommendation
Staff recommends that the ACHP recommend approval of Dodge Nature Center’s proposed
addition to the Shepard Farmhouse.
