Discussion In preparation for the May 18 City Council meeting, it is time to make a recommendation for the 2022 Historic Preservationist of the Year. Last year's recipient was Herb Japs for his years of dedicated contribution to the ACHP. In preparation for this meeting, ACHP Chair Reckinger has submitted a list of potential candidates. Attached is a list of past preser- vationists of the year. Recommendation The ACHP shall review, discuss, and make a recommendation for the 2022 Historic Preserva- tionist of the Year. City staff has reviewed Chair Reckinger's list and recommends the post- humous nomination of Jim Jansen as the 2022 Historic Preservationist of the Year. Attachments A. Chair Reckinger's Nominations B. List of Previous Historic Preservationists of the Year Chair Reckinger's Recommendations - Jim Jansen of the Jansen Farm at the end of 90t" Street has passed, but we gave the award to Herb Japs, after his passing. We are fortunate to still have Jim's longstanding farm, right next door to housing developments. Jim took care of that farm until a few months before his passing. We also cannot forget the 3 connecting concrete slabs of the former aircraft arrow, the generator and the tower. The slabs have been untouched for almost 100 years. In Jim's absence, I know his son Pat, quite well. The aircraft arrow and story behind it, are very unique anywhere. The Gerlach implement business in Old Cottage Grove has operated for many decades. I bought my snow blower there, but they do more than blowers and mowers. They still provide the farmers of our area, the sale and repairs of their farm machinery. Our Cottage Grove and Denmark farmers are fortunate to have Gerlach's so close. Farming is still a proud part of our CG heritage. The Cedarhurst development folks are doing their best to keep our historic mansion in one piece and might also be considered. Maybe Wayne and Angie Butt have not received that award yet. They have done great so far and are committed to the Steen and Furber homes. Michael and Paula Bushilla have made a number of improvements to the former McIntosh and Healy property- Hope Glen. Yes, since the 1850s, the Bushillas are the 3rd owners. They may have received the award already. The Masons at the Accacia Lodge in Old Cottage Grove are also strong candidates. The old church, turned lodge is a fragile structure. We got to tour it a few years ago. Their work so far, has been outstanding. The State DNR has done a fine job in attempting to restore the Dunes SNA to its pre agricultural era of prairie grass and red oaks. The birders and naturalists come from all over the area to catch a glimpse of the rare birds and landscapes, even though this area will be surrounded by us soon with our great developments. The Washington County Parks have made so many great improvements at the Ravine Park. It is more accessible now and continues to become more popular. Again, like the Dunes SNA, the park has a number of geographic and geologic characteristics. In addition, Herb frequently visited historic sites with other ACHP members and was instrumental in recommending additional sites for historic reservation. -3-
