RE: 2023 Historic Preservationist of the Year
Introduction
The ACHP annually nominates a person or organization who goes above and beyond to
promote an aspect of Cottage Grove's history that helps to share our understanding and
general knowledge of the people and places of Cottage Grove's past.
Background
Last year's recipient was the Accacia Masonic Lodge No. 51, which is located at 11094 70th
Street South and was built in 1866 in the style of a Greek Revival style church that reflects
the development of the Old Cottage Grove community. The First Congregational Church
occupied the site until 1963. Since 1963, the building has been used by Accacia Lodge No.
51. In 1987 the structure was officially added to the City of Cottage Grove's Register of
Historic Sites and Landmarks. In 2020 the Lodge completed an exterior restoration project
that included replacing windows and repainting the historical structure.
Discussion
At the March 14 meeting, the ACHP voted to allow the public to submit nominations. On
March 19, City staff launched a Historic Preservationist of the Year nomination webpage.
The website will accept nominations until Friday, April 7. Staff will provide list of the nomina-
tions received at the meeting.
Recommendation
The ACHP shall review nominations discuss, and make a recommendation for the 2023
Historic Preservationist of the Year.
