Re: Goal SettingfTeam Building
Various members of Counal, from time to time, have mentioned a desire to get together to discuss
Council goals. I have been delaying this in order to increase my familiarization wRh the operation prior
to any such session. While I may not yet have reached my comfort levei d seems additionai delay
would not be fiuitfui.
Last wiMer my past employer hired Don Salvercla (Saivercla and Associates) to provide for just such an
activ8y. In that case, Council and Department Heads convened on a Saturday (8:00 am to 4:00 pm).
We discussed our concems, those things we thought shouid be celebrated, and those that we should
strive toward. We aiso walked through decision-making exercises inGuding self-analyses of decision-
making styles. Going into the day various paRitipants were not completely enthused with the exercise.
Upon completion every participant expresseci that they had gained a new understanding from the event
(time weil spent). I am suggescing that we go through the same process here.
Mr. SaNerda suggested that SaturcJay, April 18, or a week later, the 25"' be considered for the exerase.
The cost will be something under $2,500 (he wiil provide a quote... but not in time for this
memorandum). The funding source would be the Councii Uaining budget. As noted, my most recent
experience with this program induded department heads, which Don suggested be done here as well.
An attemative would be jusc Counal and the City Administrator, or, if you wish, some portion of the
departmerrt heads (such as major operating departments). The most indusive event wouid inGude up
to 16 persons (inGuding acting position(s)}.
Councii Action
1. Direct the City Administratorto provide for a goai setting exerc.ise as noted above.
2. Provkle direction on the date and partiapants.
