MEMORANDUM
T0: Honorable Mayor and City Council
Ryan Schroeder, City Administrator
FROM: Kim Lindquist, Community Development Direotor
DATE: June 18, 1998
RE: Capital Purchase — Planning/Administration Vehicle
INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this memorandum is to request City Council authorization to purchase
a Pianning/Administration car, which was budgeted in the 1998 Vehicle & Equipment
Replacement Fund.
BACKGROUND
As a part of the 1998 budgeting process, two new vehicies were s{ated for replace-
ment in the budget. One car was for Planning/Administration use; the other was for
Building Inspector use. $16,000 was allocated for each of the two vehicles. With the
decrease in staffing for the inspector positions, staff is not proposing purchasing two
vehicies. Rather the expenditure is for the PlanninglAdministration vehicle and is
slightly above that anticipated in the 1998 budget. The projected cost, including tax,
is $19,738. Although the cost of this car is greater than that allocated in the 1998
Replacement Schedule, because of the reduction in the number of vehicles purchased
for the Community Development Department, there is an overall dollar savings.
The vehicle previously ailocated to Administration is an old police car that required a
fair amount of maintenance and didn't always run. Typicaliy, we would try to use that
as a trade-in to decrease the cost of the new vehicle. However, the Police Department
has invested some additional funds into that car and is using it temporarily for their
CSO's.
It is expected that the new vehicle would service several departments ad allow for
City use to seminars and in-town driving. The Oldsmobile Intrigue is the same model
that was recently purchased for the Police Captains. The Captains' purchase was
authorized in March, 1998. The following lists the three quotes they received:
Capital Purchase — Planning/Administration VehiGe
June 18, 1998
Page 2
Grossman Chevrolet 1998 Lumina $19,930.00
Trail Dodge 1998 Dodge Intrepid $23,160.00
McCarthy Oldsmobile 1998 Intrigue $18,800.00
Aithough this expenditure is $1,000 more than the March information, it continues to
be the lowest quote of the three.
RECOMMENDATION
Authorize purchase of vehicle.
