Re: Acknowiedgement of U-Lead & U/R Volunteers
In 1997, the Recreation Department developed the U-Lead Program. This program focuses on youth
ieadership, self-esteem, teamwork and otherjob skilis related to lifeguarding or working with youth at
the playgrounds.
PROGRAM MISSION: Provide youth with quality experience, that will develop their leadership skills,
self-esteem, individuality, and prepare them for the future.
Youth participants go through a two-week training and team building program covering such topics as;
» Leadership » Motivation
» Communication » Time Management
» Peer Pressure
» SeIREsteem
» Stress Management
» Diversity
» TeamworWPeer Interaction » Goals
» Conflict Management » Volunteerism
» Problem Solving and Decision Making
The second week of the program was specific to either pool or playground related skilis. At the
completion of the program, youth were encouraged to make use of their free time and volunteer with
the Recreation Department.

The first year the U-Lead Program had 17 participants who enthusiasGcaily volunteered over 1,000
combined hours. Their interest and commitment led s to expand U-Lead to inciude U!R as a
continuation of their grov✓th ad leadership experience.
In 1998, we had 28 combined U-Lead and U/R participants who participated in the program and
volunteered over 1200 hours with the Recreation Department at the playgrounds and at the pool.
These volunteer hours are very important to the success of our department.
We are proud of each and every youth participant for their accomplishments and achievements over
the course of Yhe summer and hope that they will continue to grow and develop into future leaders in
