Passed this 7 day of October 1998 Mayor Attest: City Clerk Introduced by: Seconded by: Voting in favor: Voting against: City of Cottage Grove Recreation Department . To: Honorable Mayor and Ciry Council From: Jason T. West Date: September 28, 1998 Subject: Youth Equipment Donation INTRODUCTION The Recreation Department, in conjunction with Guard Our Youth, operates an Open Basketball program for youth at the Cottage Grove Armory. During the course of the 1997-98 season, it came to our attention that many of the low-income youth in attendance did not own the proper foofinrear. Sue Kainz with the Friends in Need Food Shelf applied for a donation from the Community Sharing Fund of St. Paul Faundation. A donation of $800 was received to purchase footwear for these youth. DISCUSSION A selection of shoes wili be purchased and kept at the Gud Our Ynuth faciliiy for each person in need. Anytime that individual comes to Open Basketball their shoes will be availabie to them (for health reasons each child will have their own pair marked with their name). This will encourage the youth to keep coming back to our program. At the end of the eight-month season, the youth will be able to keep the shoes assigned to them. STAFF COMMENTS It is our intention to express our appreciation to the St. Paul Foundation, Friends in Need Food Shelf and Sue Kainz by sending each of these organizations a letter and a group picture of the youth benefiting from this donation. • Page t
