Mr. Gene Ranieri, Executive Director
Association of Metropolitan Municipalities
145 University Avenue West
St. Paul, Minnesota 55103-2044
Dear Gene,
Minnesota Statute 211 B.045 states: "In any municipality with an ordinance that
regulates the size of noncommercial signs, notwithstanding the provisions of that
ordinance, ail noncommercial signs of any size may be posted from August 1 in a
sTate general election year untii ten days following the state general election." The
impact of this language is that in this year campaign signs can be posted throughout
Minnesota communities from August 1 through November 13. This allowance for
105 days of outside advertising is regardless of local ordinance and standards that
might be contrary.
Cities throughout our state expend a great deal of effort to ensure their local
community aesthetic standards are met. The state, however, has taken away our
ability to meet community standards during the general election season, which
amounts to aimost a third of the year.
The Cty of Gattage rove is in suppoR caf lacai controi Qf all issues and requirmen#s
regarding outdoor advertising. As such the City of Cottage Grove respectFully
requesfs AMM deliberation of Statute 2118.045.
Sincerely,
Ryan R. Schroeder
